EXPATS IN PANAMA

Mort, a retired attorney, woodworker  and artisan bread baker, and I moved from our our home in Cincinnati OH with Maggie, our 2 year old labradoodle, to begin a retirement adventure in Boquete Panama.

We built a wood burning clay oven, beginning Mort's journey as The Rye Guy. At age 76 he opened Morton's Bakehouse, an artisan bakery. I established an art studio and gave lessons in silk painting and polymer clay.

We welcomed guests to our little casita, all of whom enjoyed  the fresh bread, and many of whom enjoyed lessons in art and baking.

Our home became a Jewish center of sorts for the small Jewish expat community and visiting Jewish tourists.

Eventually, our small community welcomed its first rabbi. Today Boquete has the only Jewish cemetery outside of Panama City, and the only Synagogue and Kosher bakery/restaurant in Chiriqui province.
